Over the last two days in December 2021,nearly 30 tornadoes caused great damage across six states—from Arkansas in the south to Illinois in the midwest.More than 100 tornado warnings were issued. The tornado in Kentucky caused at least 50 people’s deaths, which was described as the worst in this state’s history.

As one of the largest countries in the world, the United States is also one of the most geographically various countries—from deserts to forests to miles of coastline. While this comes with many advantages, this unfortunately leaves the country easily damaged by all kinds of natural disasters.

Different parts of the United States face different types of natural disasters. The west coast is at risk of wildfires, earthquakes, and even volcanic eruptions. The southern part of the country is frequently hit by tornadoes, and the east coast faces the threat of serious hurricanes every year.Midwestern areas near rivers are often flooded by huge floods.

The governments reviewed the weather event in each state’s history that caused the highest number of deaths to determine the worst natural disaster in every state. Thanks to their location and geographic research, some states made preparations ahead of time to avoid mass-casualty(有大规模伤亡的) weather events.

However, many other parts of the country have been less fortunate, experiencing massive storms and floods. Many such events, like the 1900 hurricane that hit Galveston of Texas, killed so many people that it was impossible to get an exact number of final deaths, especially during that time.

American weather continues to become more changeable. In 2018,there were 14 weather events that caused over $1 billion in damage. And in many parts of the country, these weather events could become even more destructive(毁灭性的) because of global warming.

Everyone tries to get to school on time. But when bad weather gives you trouble, can you still make it before the bell rings?

In northern China during spring, big sandstorms(沙尘暴) often make trouble for students and everyone else. When the sky is dark with sand(沙子),buses and cars all move much more slowly.Sometimes, people can’t even see for 20 meters.Sandstorms usually happen in spring. They have happened in more than 10 provinces in northern China this year.

People in southern China don’t have to worry about this kind of bad weather. Most of the sand comes from Gansu and Inner Mongolia(内蒙古).In northern China, lots of places have few trees and don’t get much rain.People there have been cutting down too many trees. When there aren’t many trees, the ground can’t keep enough water.Over the years, the ground dries up and turns to sand. When spring comes and the ice melts(融化),the ground becomes looser(更松散的).Strong winds take the loose sand into the sky.

Sandstorms are bad for people’s health. If people breathe too much sand, they could cough or have asthma(哮喘).Sandstorms also give farmers lots of problems.Sometimes their sheep get lost in the storms and never get back home. The winds also tear down farmers’ houses.

To stop sandstorms, you can ask your parents to help you plant some trees this spring. If you see people cutting down too many trees, tell them about the dangers of sandstorms, and ask your government to stop them from cutting.

An earthquake can strike without warning. But many injuries and deaths from this kind of natural disaster can be prevented if people follow these safety tips.

If you’re inside a building, stay there! One of the most dangerous things to do in an earthquake is to try to leave a building.   1   Drop down onto the ground.Get under an object that is not easily damaged.Hold on to it until the shaking stops. You can also get to a corner formed by two walls with your arms over your head.If you’re in bed when the quake hits, stay there and protect your head with a pillow.

2   Don’t take shelter under trees, streetlights, telegraph poles or tall buildings. If you are driving, stop as quickly as possible and stay away from overpasses, buildings, bridges or anything else that might fall or collapse over you.   3

If you are trapped in the ruins, cover your mouth with a handkerchief or a piece of clothing.Use your cellphone to call for help if possible.Don’t shout.   4   Tap on a pipe or the wall so rescuers can find you.
